A Socio-medical Survey on Sickness Prevalence and Folk Medical Practice Among the Land Reclamation Workers


Abstract
The survey was carried out duriug a 10 days period from 11th to 20th april, 1965 for the purpose of understanding the current status of sickness prevalence and folk medical practice among -the land reclamation workers. in Cholla-Nam Do area.
As a result, following conclusions were obtained;
1) Living Status.
a. The mean age of 477 workers interviewed stood 34.1610.15 years. The 86.8% of their main job was labor and 44.8 % had no occupation previously.
b. Cholla-Nam Do was largest with 55.8% as their birth places and Hamkyung-Nam Do least with 0.2%.
c. The 34.8% of workers was collectively accommodated and 24.1% was tenants.
d. The-74.8% of workers had no religion and 17.4% was christians.
e: The 54.3 % ¢¥of workers was primary-school-educated and 2.5% was college-educated.
2) Sickness Prevalence and Medical Utilization.
a. the 114 persons, or 23.9% of workers had sickness at the time interviewed and¢¥the diseases of nervous system and sense organs were largest with 35.1% among total sicknesses.
b. Total number of medical utilization during the period of 1 year from april, 1964 to march, 1965 was 3,065 cases; drug store was visited largest with 55.0% of total cases utilized and hospital admission and health center were least respectively with 1.9%.
3) Folk medical Practice.
a. Of the total cases utilized folk medical self-treatment during the period of 1 year from april, 1964 through march, 1965, the 28.28% was conducted for treating the diseases of digestive system and 10.1% was for infectious and parasitic diseases and mental, psychoneurotic and personality disorders respectively.
b. Total cases used folk medical self-treatment were 198 cases and most of them were unscientific and empirical in their practices.
